Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his willingness to initiate an investigation into the professional relationship between iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu and businessman Jason Zhong, provided that the issue is formally brought to his attention. In an interview, Mr. Rabuka stated that he has not yet received any information regarding this matter, but he intends to speak with Minister Vasu if it reaches his office.
The discussion follows revelations from the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), which cited a 2020 Fiji police briefing document connecting Zhong to past convictions for sex and drug trafficking. Despite being a free individual, Zhong is reportedly facing additional charges from Fiji’s anti-corruption commission related to allegations of bribing officials within the iTaukei Land Trust Board, which is responsible for lease agreements concerning lands belonging to traditional clans.
Mr. Vasu declined to comment further on the allegations when contacted for clarification.
