Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his willingness to initiate an investigation into the professional relationship between iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu and businessman Jason Zhong, should the matter be formally brought to his attention. During an interview, Mr. Rabuka indicated that while he has not yet received any reports on this issue, he intends to speak with Mr. Vasu directly before taking any further steps.
The discussion follows a recent report from the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), which highlighted a 2020 police briefing document that profiles Mr. Zhong. The report noted that Zhong has faced convictions in the past two decades for sex and drug trafficking. Currently, despite being free, he is under investigation by Fiji’s anti-corruption commission for allegedly bribing officials linked to the iTaukei Land Trust Board, which governs land leases for traditional clans in Fiji.
In response to inquiries from The Fiji Times, Mr. Vasu declined to make any further comments on the situation.
This situation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in government dealings, particularly regarding potential conflicts of interest and integrity in public office. As the Prime Minister remains open to addressing any concerns formally raised, it presents an opportunity for a thorough examination of affiliations that might affect public trust.
As this story develops, it could serve as a pivotal moment for governance in Fiji, emphasizing the necessity for diligence in the operations of public officials and their associations. This could lead to improved regulatory measures and reinforce the integrity of the political landscape in the nation.
