Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his approval regarding the Tribunal’s decision to exonerate Christopher Pryde, who has been reinstated as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) following allegations of misconduct. At a recent press conference, Rabuka praised President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for restoring Pryde to his position and reinstating his lost salary and benefits.

Highlighting the significance of this ruling, Rabuka emphasized the importance of due process throughout the inquiry conducted by the Tribunal. He expressed gratitude towards the Chairman and members for their detailed investigation and comprehensive report. The Tribunal’s examination of the term “misbehaviour,” which is not explicitly defined in the Fijian Constitution, is particularly notable as it establishes a precedent for the Judicial Services Commission and other related bodies in handling future cases involving judicial officers.

Rabuka conveyed confidence in Pryde’s capability to perform his duties independently, stating that he is bound to ensure fair and impartial application of the law. This reinstatement is seen as a positive change, not just for Pryde but also for the overall stability and integrity of Fiji’s legal system.

The Tribunal’s determination not only cleared Pryde of all allegations but also contributes valuable jurisprudence regarding the interpretation of “misbehaviour.” This is expected to aid in formulating clearer policies for addressing future complaints against judicial and quasi-judicial officials.

This development is a hopeful sign of strengthening governance and accountability within Fiji’s judiciary, fostering public trust in the institutions that uphold justice. The joint efforts of the Tribunal and the leadership reflect a commitment to fairness and due process, paving the way for continued improvements in the legal landscape of the country.
