PM Proposes Inquiry into FICAC Allegations: What’s Next?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that a Commission of Inquiry is the most suitable and unbiased way to investigate the allegations concerning the operations of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

Responding to inquiries from local media about an interview given by Francis Pulewai, the former Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized that an independent commission would be more effective in addressing the allegations raised by Pulewai, which notably include claims of ministerial interference in FICAC’s investigations.

Rabuka stated, “If such an inquiry finds that undue interference occurred, the recommended due process by the Commission of Inquiry will need to be followed.” He also affirmed that there have been no alterations to the laws governing FICAC and insisted that the government is committed to upholding the law.

Regarding the allegations that Pulewai was threatened, the Prime Minister denounced any such threats, should they have occurred. He also mentioned that he was not informed of any threats nor had they been reported to him or the Fiji Police.
