“PM Appeals for Community Unity Against Drug Crisis in Fiji”

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called on Ratu Kadavulevu School (RKS), Queen Victoria School (QVS), and the communities in Tailevu North to collaborate with the Government in combating the narcotics issue in Fiji. His appeal came during the RKS Centennial celebration at Albert Park in Suva, where he noted that city cleaners discovered drug-related evidence among the rubbish collected following the Hibiscus Festival.

Rabuka emphasized his concerns, stating, “I hope that when the city cleaners clean up the venue tomorrow morning, they will not find any evidence of drug use.” He explained that on his way to community service, he had asked the police to inspect the rubbish pile at the Hibiscus venue, which turned up evidence of drug use.

He urged the community to unite against this negative influence, expressing confidence in the Lodoni/RKS community’s ability to take action. Additionally, he expressed his desire for RKS to remain a source of hope and a model of character, fostering outstanding citizens for the future of the nation.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, confirmed the presence of methamphetamine, marijuana, and syringes in the vicinity of the festival sites. He reported that loose syringes were found near Nabukalou Creek, behind Village 6 cinema, and at the Bowling Club, highlighting a significant concern regarding community safety and drug use.

Driu noted, “People have not come and reported it, and this is the biggest worry for us because people are using these syringes in different ways.” The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the use of these syringes.
