Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has clarified that the recent reassignment of the Policing and Immigration ministerial portfolios is not connected to the ongoing investigation into unauthorized passport issuances. This announcement follows the voluntary decision by Minister Pio Tikoduadua to step aside from his dual roles in November 2024, intending to facilitate an impartial investigation into the matter.
The inquiry was sparked by allegations regarding a child affiliated with the Grace Road Church, whose mother claimed to have suffered severe mistreatment from the organization for eight years. Concerns arose about the issuance of a Fijian passport to the child just before a planned trip abroad. Grace Road has refuted these allegations as misleading.
During a media conference, Rabuka emphasized that he has not seen the investigation’s findings, asserting that the decision to reassign the portfolios to Ioane Naivalurua and Viliame Naupoto, members of the opposition Group of Nine (G9), was made independently of the inquiry results.
This reassignment signifies the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability amidst serious allegations. While the situation remains tense, it presents an opportunity for reforms that could enhance public trust in the governing processes. The Prime Minister’s proactive approach demonstrates a willingness to ensure effective governance during complex investigations.
In summary, the cabinet reshuffle reflects a responsive and responsible approach to governance. As investigations progress, this could pave the way for necessary changes that reinforce the rights of all individuals and contribute positively to Fiji’s political landscape. It is hoped that these actions will foster greater confidence in governance and the legal processes involved.
