Plea for Seawall Construction: Daku Villagers Seek Government Assistance

Daku villagers on Kia Island, Macuata are urging the Government to build a seawall to protect them from the ongoing threat of climate change.

This appeal comes as villagers face continuous coastal erosion, which poses a serious risk to their homes and livelihoods. Joana Finau, spokesperson for the Daku Emergency Development Committee, stated that a proper seawall could mitigate the erosion.

“Our land is being washed away by the sea. Climate change is a threat we face every day,” Ms. Finau said.

Her husband, Apikuku Finau, expressed concern for the safety of the village residents. “The lives of the 11 households are now at stake. The seawall can help prevent the sea from reaching our homes,” he said.

Ms. Finau added that the development committee has prioritized this project alongside addressing the water crisis and constructing an evacuation center.

Currently in the United States, Ms. Finau emphasized the urgency of their request. “Every day, a bit of the coastline is washed away. We urgently want Government help. There is a program devoted to seawall construction, and we ask if our village can be included,” she said.

She also suggested that the responsible ministry conduct more awareness programs for coastal villages to educate them on the challenges posed by climate change.
