Plan Ahead: The Key to Safer Roads This Weekend

Drivers are urged to plan their journeys in advance to prevent speeding-related accidents. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, Director of Traffic, emphasized the importance of time management, especially with major events occurring this weekend.

“Every day, we are issuing tickets for speeding violations, and we are concerned that poor time management will lead to reckless driving,” SSP Divuana stated. He described those who ignore speed limits as selfish, noting that latecomers often resort to dangerous speeds, which is a significant factor in accidents and fatalities.

He urged drivers to recognize that speeding endangers everyone on the road, with repercussions extending beyond just legal penalties. The Director of Traffic encouraged the community to speak out against unsafe driving behaviors.

“If you’re a passenger, don’t hesitate to voice your concerns about unsafe practices. If you’re part of a traveling group, ensure that plans are made well in advance to lessen the likelihood of the driver feeling rushed,” he added.

The Fiji Police Force reiterated that speeding elevates the risk of accidents due to reduced reaction times and vehicle control. Furthermore, speeding can lead to more severe injuries in accidents, significantly impacting the victims’ families.

Authorities reminded everyone to adhere to safe driving practices at all times to help prevent accidents.
