Plan Ahead or Speeding Dangers Await: A Road Safety Reminder

Drivers are being urged to plan their journeys in advance to prevent speeding, which can lead to accidents. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, Director of Traffic, emphasized the importance of effective time management, especially with significant events slated for this weekend. He noted that failure to plan can lead to rushed driving and increased speeding offenses.

“Each day we are issuing tickets for speeding, and we are concerned that if people do not manage their time properly, they will resort to speeding,” SSP Divuana stated. He described drivers who ignore speed limits as selfish and lacking consideration for others.

Divuana explained that being late often results in speeding, a known contributor to accidents and fatalities. He stressed that drivers must realize that speeding endangers everyone’s safety and can have serious consequences beyond legal penalties.

He also encouraged the public to take an active role in promoting safe driving behaviors. “If you’re a passenger, speak up against dangerous driving. If you are traveling in a group, make sure to prepare everything in advance to prevent the driver from feeling rushed.”

The Fiji Police Force reiterated that speeding heightens the likelihood of accidents by reducing a driver’s reaction time and control over their vehicle. “Speeding can lead to more severe injuries in the event of an accident and has lasting effects on the victims’ families,” SSP Divuana added.

The police are calling for adherence to safe driving practices at all times to help avoid accidents.
