Authorities are facing increasing pressure to tackle the ongoing problem of illegal taxi operators, known as “pirate taxis,” following a serious incident in Nadi where a Virgin Australia airline crew member was allegedly raped and assaulted on New Year’s morning. A man in his 20s, believed to be a farmer, has been charged with one count of each offense and is expected to appear in Nadi Magistrate’s Court today.
The disturbing incident is said to have occurred after the victim, who had left a nightclub in Martintar, accepted a ride from an unregistered taxi operator. A second crew member also fell victim to an attack after being misled by a group of young men, resulting in a mugging and assault.
Ashwin Lal, general secretary of the Fiji Taxi Association, voiced serious concerns regarding the dangers posed by illegal taxis, which he termed a significant threat to public safety. He has urged the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to take firmer action against these illegal operators, emphasizing the need for only registered drivers to operate in the region.
Lal warned that allowing such incidents to continue could damage Fiji’s reputation as a safe tourist destination, particularly around areas like Nadi Airport, where many visitors depend on taxi services. He encouraged both locals and tourists to steer clear of unregistered transport providers, noting that these drivers often lack the necessary training and qualifications to ensure passenger safety.
The LTA has previously cautioned private vehicle owners against unauthorized Public Service Vehicle operations, with CEO Irimaia Rokosawa reminding the public that such activities remain illegal. He highlighted that passengers also play a role in perpetuating the issue by opting for pirate taxis, stating: “If there’s no demand, there won’t be any supply.”
In response to rising security concerns, police have increased patrols in Nadi’s nightlife areas, including Martintar. Lal has called for more stringent enforcement against illegal operators, noting that licensed taxi drivers are at a disadvantage and the public remains at risk. He remarked, “This issue is not new. It’s time for decisive action to protect lives and livelihoods.”
The response from authorities and community leaders illustrates a commitment to enhancing public safety and restoring trust in transportation services, ensuring that such unfortunate incidents become a rare exception rather than a common occurrence.
In summary, the alarming incidents involving illegal taxi operators have reignited discussions about public safety in Fiji, with calls for stronger action to protect both residents and visitors. This situation highlights the importance of adhering to regulations and fostering a safer community for all.
