Authorities are facing mounting pressure to tackle the ongoing issue of illegal taxi operators, commonly referred to as “pirate taxis,” in light of a recent alleged assault on a member of the Virgin Australia flight crew on New Year’s morning in Nadi. A man in his 20s, believed to be a farmer, was charged with rape and sexual assault and is slated to appear today in the Nadi Magistrate’s Court.
The incident reportedly took place after the crew member, leaving a nightclub in Martintar, accepted a ride from an unregistered taxi driver. Additionally, another crew member was targeted and assaulted after being misdirected by a group of young men.
Ashwin Lal, General Secretary of the Fiji Taxi Association, voiced serious concerns over the presence of pirate taxis, highlighting their threat to public safety. He stated, “We have been urging the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to take action against illegal operators, as the safety of the public is at stake.” Lal cautioned that such violations could harm Fiji’s reputation as a tourist destination, especially in areas frequented by visitors like Nadi Airport.
The LTA has previously issued warnings to private vehicle owners about unauthorized Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operations, emphasizing that these practices remain illegal. Irimaia Rokosawa, CEO of LTA, noted that passengers also play a role in this problem by engaging with pirate taxi services, saying, “If there’s no demand, there won’t be any supply.”
In response to increasing safety concerns, police have ramped up patrols in Nadi’s nightclub districts. Lal urged for stricter enforcement and indicated that registered taxi drivers are at a disadvantage while the public continues to be at risk. He insisted, “This issue is not new. It’s time for decisive action to protect lives and livelihoods.”
