Authorities are facing increasing pressure to tackle the ongoing problem of illegal taxi operations, often referred to as “pirate taxis,” following a disturbing incident involving the alleged rape and sexual assault of a Virgin Australia airline crew member in Nadi on New Year’s morning. A man in his twenties has been charged with one count each of rape and sexual assault and is slated to appear in the Nadi Magistrate’s Court today.
The incident reportedly took place after the victim, who had left a nightclub in Martintar, Nadi, accepted a ride from an unregistered taxi driver. Additionally, a second crew member was assaulted after being misled by a group of young men, who proceeded to mug him as well.
Ashwin Lal, the general secretary of the Fiji Taxi Association, has voiced serious concerns over the dangers posed by illegal taxi operators, emphasizing that they constitute a significant threat to public safety. He has called on the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to take more decisive action against these illicit services, as the safety of the public is on the line. Lal warned that such incidents could damage Fiji’s image as a tourist destination, particularly around Nadi Airport, where many tourists depend on taxi services.
The LTA had previously cautioned private vehicle owners against carrying out unauthorized Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operations. CEO Irimaia Rokosawa stressed that these activities are illegal and highlighted that passengers also share some responsibility: “By paying pirate taxi operators, passengers contribute to the problem. If there’s no demand, there won’t be any supply.”
In response to rising security concerns, police have boosted patrols in the nightclub areas of Nadi, including Martintar. Lal reiterated the need for stricter enforcement against illegal taxi operators, noting that registered taxi drivers face losses while the public remains vulnerable. He urged a more proactive approach: “This issue is not new. It’s time for decisive action to protect lives and livelihoods.”

It serves as a reminder to both locals and visitors to prioritize their well-being by choosing legitimate transportation providers.
