Pioneering Autism Awareness: Fiji’s First Private School Takes a Stand

Pioneer Education Fiji has launched the Autism Acceptance and Awareness Month, marking it as the first private inclusive school in the country to spearhead such an initiative. The school’s Managing Director, Malisha Chand, has emphasized the urgent need for stronger advocacy and a deeper understanding of autism spectrum disorders within the community.

Chand urged for increased awareness programs that mirror the success of events like library week and early childhood education week, aiming to eliminate the misconceptions surrounding autism. She recounted her own childhood experiences, noting the lack of awareness that often led to misunderstanding those with autism. “Autism cannot be healed, but we can help them balance their life,” she stated, reinforcing the idea that children on the spectrum need specialized interventions to thrive.

Moreover, she cautioned against the denial some parents exhibit when teachers observe early signs of autism in their children, linking it to the stigma that still exists around these conditions. Chand recorded that parents who have transitioned their children from Pioneer Education Fiji to mainstream schools felt their children lacked the necessary attention and support, highlighting the unique educational approach at Pioneer Education Fiji.

To better equip future educators, she recommended that tertiary institutions require education students to undertake practical training at inclusive centers. This hands-on experience is crucial in preparing them to address diverse learning needs effectively.

This initiative dovetails with the growing recognition of the importance of inclusive education in Fiji. Recently reported data indicates that over 2,200 students with disabilities are now enrolled in both special and mainstream schools. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has expressed optimism about the advancements made in this area while acknowledging the ongoing journey ahead to ensure all students have access to quality education.

The advocacy for autism acceptance and awareness is not only a pivotal step for educational institutions but also a potential turning point for societal understanding and inclusivity. Such initiatives highlight the power of education to foster a more accepting and supportive environment for individuals with diverse abilities, ultimately striving for a community where acceptance is the norm, rather than the exception.
