The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) is advocating for the essential principles of freedom of expression and press freedom throughout the Pacific region. This comes in response to concerns raised by both the Palau Media Council and the Pacific Freedom Forum regarding a defamation lawsuit initiated by Surangel Whipps Jr.’s father against the national publication, Island Times Palau.
The lawsuit, filed by Surangel and Sons against the newspaper’s editor, Leilani Reklai, has sparked dialogue about the role of media in upholding democracy. President Whipps Jr. accused Island Times of disseminating what he termed political propaganda that lacks accuracy.
PINA’s president, Kalafi Moala, emphasized the urgent need for media to act as defenders of democracy and called for immediate freedoms not only in Palau but across the Pacific islands. He expressed concern over increasing opposition and intimidation faced by the media in several nations, particularly in Palau, where press freedom is currently at risk.
The organization has taken steps to demonstrate its support for Reklai by reaching out to the Palau President’s office, stressing the intricate link between freedom of speech and democracy. Moala asserted that as Palauans participated in elections, safeguarding journalistic freedom is more crucial than ever.
This situation underscores the ongoing global struggle for press freedom, highlighting the necessity for societies to protect their journalists and media outlets. By rallying for this cause, PINA is not only advocating for the specific case at hand but also fostering a broader dialogue around the importance of free expression and democratic principles.
In essence, this event serves as a reminder of the vital role a free press plays in democracy, encouraging hope for continued advocacy and support for media freedom in the Pacific region.
