A recent incident at the Yasawa Aerodrome saw six passengers and their pilot experience a close call after their aircraft miscalculated its landing position. Fortunately, all involved escaped with minor injuries.
According to a statement from the Fiji Government, the incident involved a GA-8 Airvan, registered as DQ-VAN, which took off from Nadi Airport at 9:49 am. During its landing at Yasawa Aerodrome, the aircraft overran the runway, coming to a stop just beyond the strip. It suffered damage primarily to its nose wheel and propeller.
Despite the mishap, the Yasawa Aerodrome remains operational, and normal aviation activities are continuing. The Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, has announced plans to appoint an investigator who will conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident in accordance with established procedures and international standards. The outcomes of this investigation will be crucial in guiding future measures to enhance aviation safety.
