PIF Mission to New Caledonia Set for October: What to Expect?

The Pacific Islands Forum Troika-led mission to New Caledonia is set to take place in early October, as confirmed by Secretary General Baron Waqa during a press conference today.

Waqa noted that foreign leaders have expressed their continued support for the Troika mission, and discussions are ongoing with both the New Caledonia government and France regarding the potential deployment of the mission this October.

The Forum has collaborated with the French State and the New Caledonia government to ensure that the mission’s objectives and arrangements align with the expectations of all relevant stakeholders.

Previously, the New Caledonia Government raised concerns over due process and protocol requirements, leading to the mission’s postponement last month.

Waqa also confirmed that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will be part of the delegation. The Forum Troika serves as a vital regional political consultative mechanism, with representation from Forum Leaders, playing a crucial role in promoting regional initiatives.
