PIF Mission to New Caledonia Set for October: What to Expect?

The Pacific Islands Forum Troika-led mission to New Caledonia is set to take place in early October, as confirmed by Secretary General Baron Waqa during a press conference. He indicated that foreign leaders have reaffirmed their support for the mission and discussions are ongoing with the governments of New Caledonia and France regarding the logistics of the deployment.

The Forum has collaborated with the French government and the New Caledonian authorities to ensure that the mission objectives align with the expectations of all relevant stakeholders. The government of New Caledonia had previously raised concerns about due process and protocol, which led to the postponement of the mission last month.

Secretary General Waqa also confirmed that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will be part of the delegation. The Forum Troika serves as a high-level regional political consultative mechanism, consisting of Forum Leaders, playing a vital role in advancing regional initiatives.
