The Wellington Phoenix has announced the departure of long-serving striker David Ball, a decision that allows the club to explore new talent ahead of the upcoming A-League transfer window. The 35-year-old English forward and the Phoenix mutually agreed to terminate the remaining six months of his contract, marking the end of his five-and-a-half-year tenure with the club.

During his time with the Phoenix, Ball made 122 appearances, scoring 15 goals and providing 26 assists. He played a crucial role in helping the team reach the finals in four of his five seasons and was named Player of the Year in 2020, contributing significantly to the club’s highest regular-season finish of third place that year. Ball reflected on his emotional connection to the Phoenix, stating, “I’ve put my heart and soul into the club since I got here and I’ve fallen in love with the Nix, the people around it, and the fans.”

This season, his involvement on the field has been limited, as he only appeared as a substitute during the opening match. Coach Giancarlo Italiano’s preference for younger players may have influenced the mutual decision to part ways, particularly as the Phoenix currently sits in 10th place in the league, having lost six of their first eleven games.

Director of football Shaun Gill praised Ball as “the ultimate pro,” emphasizing his positive impact on the club’s culture, especially during the challenging times posed by COVID-19. Club captain Alex Rufer also acknowledged Ball’s leadership and friendship, particularly during difficult seasons.

Looking to the future, Ball has expressed a desire to continue playing, ideally staying in New Zealand, while also wanting to spend quality time with his family. The opening of the transfer window presents a fresh opportunity for the Phoenix to rejuvenate their roster and build towards a more competitive season.

This transition, while marking the end of an era for Ball at the club, not only highlights his legacy but also symbolizes a new chapter for the Wellington Phoenix as they look to bolster their squad and improve their performance in the A-League. Fans will undoubtedly remember Ball’s contributions fondly as they welcome the changes ahead.
