Sacred Heart College’s Peter Burese leapt into the spotlight at the Coca‑Cola Games Suva Zone One meet, clearing a new senior boys high jump mark of two metres at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday. The performance eclipsed his own previous best of 1.90m and represents a significant step up as he prepares to take on tougher opposition at the upcoming Fiji Finals.
Burese’s two‑metre clearance stood out among a strong showing across the two‑day zone competition, held for schools across Suva and surrounding areas. The result not only secures him top honours in the senior boys high jump for Zone One but also positions him as a medal prospect when the national finals convene, where athletes from other zones will compete for Coca‑Cola Games honours.
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School (MGM) continued to dominate the medal table across both divisions. In the girls division MGM sits clear at the top with 13 gold, six silver and eight bronze medals — a haul of 27 medals in total. Ratu Sukuna Memorial School (RSMS) is second among girls with three gold and one silver, while Ballantine Memorial School occupies third place with two gold and two silver medals.
MGM’s success was mirrored in the boys division, where the school leads the standings with nine gold, four silver and two bronze medals, totalling 15. RSMS follows in second among the boys with four gold, five silver and two bronze, and Nasinu Secondary School rounds out the top three with two gold, three silver and five bronze medals.
Organisers said the Zone One meet is the penultimate stage for many athletes seeking qualification and momentum ahead of the national Coca‑Cola Games finals. Performances such as Burese’s new record are being watched closely by coaches and selectors, as zone competitions often foreshadow the medal favourites at the Fiji Finals.
The two‑day Suva Zone One competition concludes today at HFC Bank Stadium, with final events expected to determine remaining individual champions and influence the final team standings. With several standout performances already recorded, attention now turns to whether Burese and other zone leaders can carry their form through to the national stage.
