Perry Baker Bids Farewell: A Decade of Glory in Rugby Sevens

Perry Baker, a two-time World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year, has officially retired from professional rugby after spending a decade representing the USA and making three Olympic appearances. The star athlete shared his decision on social media on October 14, announcing that the 2023/24 SVNS season would be his final one.

Baker, who has an impressive record of 293 tries in the sevens series circuit, received tributes from various notable figures, including Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, as well as rivals and sevens federations, showcasing the respect he has garnered in the sporting community.

Although he is stepping away from playing, Baker will remain involved with rugby by taking on the role of assistant coach for the USA men’s sevens team for the remainder of the year.

Reflecting on his career, Baker stated, “After an incredible 10 years representing the USA Men’s 7s program, the time has come for me to step away from the game that has shaped so much of my life. It’s been an honor and a privilege to wear the jersey and represent my country on the world stage. From the moment I joined the team, I could never have imagined the experiences, the highs and lows, and the lifelong friendships rugby would give me.”

He expressed gratitude to the fans, noting, “Rugby isn’t just a sport, it’s a family and you guys made me feel that everywhere I went. And to rugby itself, thank you for teaching me resilience, teamwork, and leadership that will live with me forever.”

Baker started his rugby journey as a teenager in Florida and entered the international scene later than most. After a brief training period with the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles, he returned to rugby and joined the national sevens team in 2014 at the age of 28. Under coach Mike Friday, he made his USA Sevens debut that same season and was nominated for Rookie of the Year.

Over the next decade, he formed a formidable duo with fellow player Carlin Isles, earning accolades such as the Men’s World Sevens Player of the Year in 2017 and 2018. Baker also participated in every Olympic rugby sevens competition, including those in Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 (held in 2021), and the upcoming Paris 2024.
