Peni Ravai, an experienced prop and recent addition to the Fijian Drua, is eager to support the next generation of players in the Flying Fijians team. The 34-year-old recognizes that his time representing the national side may be nearing its end, as he expresses contentment with the emerging talent among the younger Fijian front rowers.
“Age is catching up, so I’m just going to let the young boys get a chance,” remarked Ravai. He noted the coaching staff’s focus on building a new team geared towards preparing for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Despite contemplating retirement from international play, Ravai remains open to future selections, affirming, “If I do get selected, I will always say yes to representing my country.”
Ravai also shared his excitement about returning to play rugby in Fiji, where his journey began. He appreciates the fresh atmosphere at Drua, particularly noting its younger players in comparison to the teams he played with in France. “There are a lot of youngsters coming up and wanting to play the game,” he said, highlighting the growing enthusiasm for rugby among the youth.
Though he is still focusing on rehabilitation after a demanding season with the Flying Fijians, Ravai is optimistic about the upcoming games. “We play each game as it comes, and I am looking forward to playing my first game,” he added.
This transition in the team lineup signifies a hopeful future for Fijian rugby, with experienced players like Ravai mentoring the next wave of talent. His commitment to his country and the development of younger players showcases the passion and dedication within the Fijian rugby community.
