The recent inauguration of the Savusavu Mabe Pearl Oyster and Handicraft showroom in Cakaudrove is poised to significantly uplift the local communities engaged in Mabe pearl farming. The showroom, which serves as a hub for grafting, value-adding, designing, and marketing, was officially launched by Alitia Bainivalu, the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry.
During the opening ceremony, Minister Bainivalu emphasized the showroom’s mission to enhance the livelihoods of coastal communities involved in Mabe pearl farming in the Cakaudrove region. She acknowledged the invaluable partnership between the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the University of Sunshine Coast, the Ministry of Fisheries, and local Mabe pearl farmers.
Minister Bainivalu reflected on the longstanding collaboration with ACIAR, which began in the 1980s with pioneering work on Giant Clams at Makogai Island. This initiative laid the foundation for sustainable aquaculture practices in Fiji. The ministry later expanded its collaboration in 2009 to include the cultivation of freshwater prawns, highlighting their commitment to fisheries development and community engagement.
The minister noted that the establishment of the showroom is not only an economic opportunity but also a vital platform for preserving traditional craftsmanship and empowering local artisans. She assured that the unique handicrafts created from Mabe pearls would not only serve as a source of community pride but also foster sustainable income generation.
Additionally, the facility will offer workshops aimed at training fisheries officers and community members on transforming raw shells into beautiful handicrafts. Minister Bainivalu described this initiative as a shared vision dedicated to community empowerment, environmental stewardship, and sustainable economic growth.
By boosting community resilience and opening pathways for development, this project aims to enable coastal communities to thrive while preserving Fiji’s rich cultural heritage and natural environment.
This initiative stands as a beacon of hope, showcasing how collaboration and sustainable practices can lead to economic development while respecting and enhancing local traditions. It promises to create new opportunities for thriving communities and the preservation of invaluable skills and heritage.
