The National Fire Authority (NFA) has made an urgent appeal to the public, emphasizing the necessity of resolving disputes peacefully instead of resorting to actions that can have devastating consequences. This appeal comes in the wake of a tragic incident in the Central-Eastern Division last weekend, where two fires occurred, resulting in the unfortunate loss of a woman in her 30s.

Puamau Sowane, CEO of the NFA, stated, “We have seen similar tragic instances this year where conflicts escalated into actions with irreversible consequences. We urge everyone to think twice and seek peaceful resolutions.” He extended his condolences to the family affected by the recent fire and reaffirmed the NFA’s commitment to protecting lives and properties.

Data from the NFA indicates that since 2016, there has been an average of six fire-related fatalities per year, with 2022 and 2018 registering the lowest fatalities at just three each. “Our mission is to save lives,” Sowane emphasized, highlighting the critical role of community cooperation in achieving this aim. Residents are encouraged to report any fire incidents immediately to facilitate prompt assistance, as quick responses can save lives and properties.

Earlier this year, a fire at the Veiquwawa settlement, which was linked to a domestic dispute, tragically illustrated how such conflicts can lead to dire outcomes. In that incident, a father managed to save his children but sadly lost his wife while attempting to rescue her. These incidents highlight the urgent need for increased awareness regarding family harmony and effective dispute management.

As communities confront these difficult challenges, there is optimism that a collective effort to enhance awareness about fire safety and the importance of mental health can cultivate a more supportive atmosphere. By prioritizing peaceful conflict resolution and maintaining vigilance around fire safety, residents can work towards preventing such tragic incidents in the future.
