Paul Scurrah Returns as Fiji Airways CEO to Lead Asia-Pacific Growth

When Paul Scurrah resigned as CEO of Virgin Australia in 2020 amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, few anticipated that he would make a return to the aviation industry. Fast forward five years, Scurrah is back in the cockpit, this time taking the reins at Fiji Airways, one of the fastest-growing airlines in the Pacific.

Scurrah’s appointment marks a fresh chapter for the airline, which thrived under outgoing CEO Andre Viljoen. During Viljoen’s decade-long leadership, Fiji Airways not only expanded its fleet and routes but also joined the prestigious Oneworld Alliance and earned the title of Best Airline in Australia/Pacific for 2024.

“There’s incredible momentum here,” Scurrah stated soon after his appointment. He emphasized his goal to build on the groundwork laid by his predecessor. With Fiji’s strategic location and robust tourism sector, he sees significant potential for continued growth within the Asia Pacific aviation market. “Fiji is ideally positioned to tap into the next wave of aviation expansion,” he noted, highlighting both leisure and business travel from Australia, the airline’s largest market.

Looking forward, Scurrah hinted at the possibility of introducing new long-haul routes, stating that memberships like Oneworld would enhance connectivity with partner airlines. Additionally, strengthening collaboration with Tourism Fiji and industry partners will remain crucial in driving demand for travel to the islands.

Reflecting on his experiences at Virgin Australia, Scurrah plans to prioritize communication and cost management, stating, “Listening to your people and customers is critical.” His leadership approach is built on the understanding that airlines need to be financially disciplined while being resilient in the face of challenges.

As global air travel is projected to increase by 5% annually through 2043, Scurrah recognizes a key challenge for Fiji Airways will be acquiring enough aircraft to meet this anticipated demand. However, the outlook for both Fiji Airways and the broader aviation landscape seems optimistic as Scurrah prepares to guide the airline into its next phase of growth.

With a strong leadership transition, Fiji Airways stands poised not only to uphold its achievements but also to explore new opportunities in an evolving aviation industry, fostering hope for a vibrant future ahead.
