Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the investigation into the alleged unauthorized issuance of passports to children of individuals connected with the Grace Road Group has been completed and is now with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further assessment. This announcement follows the appointment of Viliame Naupoto as the new Minister for Immigration, a position formerly held by Pio Tikoduadua, who stepped down last November amid scrutiny over the passport issuances.

Rabuka expressed that he is unable to provide extensive details regarding the investigation while it remains under judicial review. Tikoduadua previously stated that these passports were issued without his knowledge or the necessary approval from senior immigration officials, raising serious concerns that prompted Rabuka to temporarily take over the immigration responsibilities while inquiries were conducted by the Fiji Police Force and the Department of Immigration. The investigation has also led to the suspension of Amelia Komaisavai, the Director of Immigration.

The Grace Road Group has consistently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that children born in Fiji are entitled to citizenship under the Citizenship of Fiji Act 2009, without requiring ministerial approval. They have characterized the allegations as politically motivated, asserting that the issue has been sensationalized.

In connection with these allegations, the Ministry of Employment has revealed violations of the Employment Relations Act and the Health and Safety at Work Act within Grace Road’s operations, underscoring the importance of adhering to local labor regulations. Minister Agni Deo Singh has reiterated the need for compliance to ensure fair treatment for all workers, both local and migrant.
