Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his willingness to intervene in the investigation concerning the alleged unauthorized issuance of Fijian passports, particularly if Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, steps aside. This investigation is focused on passports purportedly issued to children of individuals connected to the Grace Road Group, which has been embroiled in human rights allegations.

During an interview from Australia, Minister Tikoduadua emphasized that the passports were issued without his knowledge or the approval of higher management within the Department of Immigration. He has indicated he would be open to stepping aside if the Prime Minister believes it necessary. However, Mr. Rabuka stated he would carefully discuss the matter with Tikoduadua before making any decisions, highlighting the importance of understanding his perspective on the situation.

A meeting between Mr. Rabuka and Mr. Tikoduadua is anticipated on Monday, providing an opportunity for further discussion. In the meantime, director of Immigration Amelia Komaisavai has been placed on leave as investigations into the passport issuance continue.

In a related development, the Grace Road Group has publicly rejected the allegations against them, describing them as “sensationalised false information.” They assert that children born in Fiji have the right to citizenship under the Citizenship of Fiji Act 2009, arguing that ministerial approval is not required for this process. The Group claims the situation is part of political targeting and misinterpretations of the law.

Additionally, the Ministry of Employment has identified several breaches of the Employment Relations Act and Health and Safety at Work Act within Grace Road Company’s operations. Minister Agni Deo Singh has committed to continuing investigations and ensuring compliant practices across all companies in Fiji.

This situation highlights ongoing governance challenges and the need for transparency and accountability in both the government and corporate sectors. Despite the controversy, there is hope that thorough investigations will lead to clearer policies and practices that ultimately benefit the rights and well-being of individuals affected by the unfolding issues.

Summary: Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is ready to intervene if Minister Pio Tikoduadua steps aside amid investigations into alleged unauthorized passport issuance linked to Grace Road Group. Tikoduadua states the passports were issued without his knowledge. Grace Road refutes allegations, asserting children’s citizenship rights. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Employment has identified breaches in employment laws affecting the company’s operations.
