Passport Scandal: Investigation Moves to Prosecution!

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced the completion of the investigation into the unauthorized issuance of passports to children associated with the Grace Road Group, a matter now in the hands of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further evaluation. This development follows the appointment of Viliame Naupoto as the new Minister for Immigration, a role previously held by Pio Tikoduadua, who stepped down last November amid allegations regarding the passport issuances.

Rabuka stated that he cannot disclose further details while the case remains active under judicial scrutiny. Tikoduadua, while attending duties in Australia, revealed that the passports were issued without his knowledge or the necessary permissions from senior officials at the Department of Immigration. As a result, Rabuka took over the immigration responsibilities pending an inquiry by the Fiji Police Force and the Department of Immigration. This situation also led to the suspension of the Director of Immigration, Amelia Komaisavai.

The Grace Road Group has consistently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that children born in Fiji are entitled to citizenship without requiring ministerial approval, citing the Citizenship of Fiji Act 2009. They characterize the allegations as politically motivated, claiming that the situation has been sensationalized. This controversy is compounded by findings from the Ministry of Employment revealing violations of the Employment Relations Act and the Health and Safety at Work Act within Grace Road’s operations, which highlight the critical need for adherence to local labor regulations.

Overall, this investigation underscores the Fijian government’s commitment to transparency and accountability. As the authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the unauthorized passports, there is hope that this will lead to clearer legal frameworks and improved governance practices that can foster public trust and protect citizens’ rights. This commitment may result in significant reforms that benefit all stakeholders involved, creating a more secure and just environment in Fiji.
