The Fiji Police Force has initiated preliminary inquiries into claims regarding the unauthorized issuance of passports to children connected to individuals from the Grace Road group. Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew has indicated that the direction of the investigation will be guided by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka after further discussions.

This development follows the resignation of Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua, who stepped down to facilitate a fair examination of the situation. According to Tikoduadua, the issuance of these passports occurred without his knowledge and lacked the approval of senior officials within the Department of Immigration.

Commissioner Chew noted that the initial investigation will help to clarify whether the Fiji Police Force or the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) will take the lead in the inquiry.

This situation highlights the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, ensuring that alleged irregularities are thoroughly scrutinized. The collaborative efforts of various government branches signal a positive approach to maintaining integrity within public service.

In summary, preliminary investigations are underway regarding the unauthorized passport issuance, with a focus on following the right protocols to ensure justice and transparency in the outcome.
