Passport Probe: How Did the Church Child Obtain One?

The Home Affairs Ministry is currently investigating how a child, linked to a member of the Grace Road Church, managed to obtain a passport shortly before a potential inquiry into allegations of human rights abuses against the child’s mother. Acting Home Affairs Minister Filimoni Vosarogo stated that the integrity of the Immigration Department is at stake and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation.

Mr. Vosarogo highlighted that the central question is whether the child was entitled to a Fijian passport. He expressed concern over the timing of the passport issuance, particularly as it coincides with a planned departure from the country, potentially to evade the investigation into the serious complaints concerning the mother.

The investigation, directed to begin last week, involves reviewing the legal provisions surrounding children born in Fiji and any exceptions that may apply. In order to ensure an impartial investigation, the Director of Immigration, Amelia Kamoisavai, and the Manager of Passports have been relieved of their roles, with acting appointments made to maintain operations.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has already started examining the circumstances surrounding the passport’s issuance, including who was responsible for the decision-making process. The inquiry is expected to conclude by the end of next week, with findings and recommendations to be reported to the Minister and the permanent secretary for Home Affairs, Mason Smith.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew confirmed that the CID’s investigation has commenced based on the mother’s report and will encompass the passport issuance process.
