Passport Printing Crisis: Government Urges Patience Amid Machine Breakdown

The passport printing process has been temporarily halted due to a malfunction in the printing machine used by the Immigration Department. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has confirmed that technical difficulties have led to the suspension of production, which affects both standard and emergency passport applications.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the issue, stating, “We are experiencing a breakdown in the passport printing machine.” He emphasized that this malfunction has resulted in significant delays for many citizens and residents applying for new or renewed passports.

This disruption is not unprecedented, as a similar communication was made back in August when the Immigration Department first pointed out technical challenges with the passport printers. At that time, the former permanent secretary for Immigration, Mason Smith, expressed awareness of the inconvenience caused and assured the public that they would be updated as soon as the situation improved.

Currently, there is no estimated timeline provided by the Immigration Department regarding when the passport printing services will resume, leaving many applicants in limbo. The government encourages patience from the public while working to resolve the technical issues.

In summary, while the current situation is frustrating, it provides an opportunity for the Immigration Department to enhance their services and explore long-term solutions to prevent future disruptions. Citizens are encouraged to remain hopeful as efforts to repair the printing machine are underway, with the promise of updates on the restoration of services.
