The Home Affairs Ministry is investigating how the child of a Grace Road Church member obtained a passport shortly before a potential inquiry into allegations of human rights violations involving the child’s mother. Acting Home Affairs Minister Filimoni Vosarogo emphasized the need for clarity on whether the child was legitimately entitled to a Fijian passport.
Mr. Vosarogo outlined concerns that the passport issuance might have been timed to facilitate the child’s exit from the country to evade scrutiny regarding the allegations against the mother. He pointed out that the integrity of Fiji’s Immigration Department is on the line, which prompted the immediate start of the investigation.
He explained that while there are legal provisions allowing children born in Fiji to obtain citizenship, certain exceptions apply, and the investigation will explore aspects beyond just this entitlement. To guarantee the investigation’s integrity, both the Director of Immigration and the Manager of Passports were relieved of their duties, with acting appointments made to ensure that operations continue without disruption.
The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has been tasked with examining possible breaches in the procedures for passport issuance and determining the individuals involved. Investigators have begun collecting statements to refine their inquiry, with an expectation to conclude the investigation by the end of next week. Following this, findings will be reported to Minister Vosarogo and Permanent Secretary Mason Smith.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew affirmed that the CID is actively investigating the passport issuance and the associated decisions.
This investigation, while serious in nature, presents an opportunity for strengthening the processes within the immigration system. Ensuring accountability and transparency in such vital areas can build public trust and enhance the integrity of governmental institutions. The swift action taken by the authorities indicates a commitment to addressing concerns and upholding justice, which is a hopeful sign for both the community and the individuals involved.
