Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has made it clear that the recent reassignment of the Policing and Immigration ministerial roles is not connected to the ongoing investigation into unauthorized passport issuances. This statement follows the decision of Pio Tikoduadua, the previous minister overseeing those portfolios, to step aside voluntarily in November 2024 to promote an unbiased investigationinto the matter.
The investigation was initiated after concerns were raised regarding a Fijian passport that was issued to a child linked to the Grace Road Church, shortly before a planned departure from the country. Allegations emerged from the child’s mother, who claimed to have endured eight years of abuses from the Grace Road organization, which the group has denied.
During a media conference, Rabuka emphasized that he has not seen the investigation results and insisted that the decision to reassign the portfolios to Ioane Naivalurua and Viliame Naupoto, members of the opposition Group of Nine, was made separately from the investigation.
This cabinet reshuffle underscores the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in governance. The Prime Minister’s proactive measures signal a determination to maintain effective leadership even amidst scrutiny and complex issues. Such decisions aim not only to address immediate challenges but also to strengthen public confidence in governmental processes.
As this situation continues to evolve, it represents a critical opportunity for reform and for enhancing the protection of individual rights within Fiji. A transparent and open approach to such serious allegations could ultimately lead to improved trust in governmental institutions and a brighter future for governance in Fiji.
