Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his willingness to intervene in the ongoing situation regarding the alleged unauthorized issuance of Fijian passports, particularly if Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, decides to step aside to facilitate the investigation. The controversy revolves around passports allegedly issued to children of individuals associated with the Grace Road Group, which has faced human rights allegations.

In a recent statement, Tikoduadua indicated that the issuance of these passports took place without his knowledge or the necessary approvals from the Department of Immigration’s senior management. He has offered to temporarily relinquish his role if advised by the Prime Minister. Rabuka stated that before making any decisions, he would speak with Tikoduadua directly, expressing that he wants to know his views on the situation.

Their meeting is scheduled for Monday, which may shed light on the next steps. Meanwhile, Amelia Komaisavai, director of Immigration, has been placed on leave as investigations continue.

In a related development, the Grace Road Group responded to the allegations, labeling them as “sensationalised false information.” They emphasized that children born in Fiji are eligible for citizenship without requiring ministerial approval, asserting that political motives underpin the claims against them.

On another front, the Ministry of Employment has uncovered numerous breaches of the Employment Relations Act and Health and Safety at Work Act at Grace Road operations across Viti Levu. Line Minister Agni Deo Singh has vowed to continue investigations and ensure all workers, regardless of their origin, are treated fairly and receive their deserved entitlements.

This situation encapsulates broader issues within the immigration and labor sectors in Fiji, highlighting the ongoing need for transparency and adherence to law and regulations. As investigations unfold, there is hope that the outcome will lead to the strengthening of governance and labor rights protections in the country.

In conclusion, this unfolding scenario emphasizes the importance of accountability in governance and the laws aimed at protecting both citizens and workers alike. It remains crucial for these investigations to restore public confidence and ensure that all individuals receive due process and fair treatment under the law.
