The chair of the Pacific Academy of Sciences has called for Pasifika experts to take a prominent role in tackling crucial issues such as climate change, health, renewable energy, and traditional knowledge across the Pacific region. This statement came following the successful conclusion of the academy’s inaugural Congress in Samoa, which took place over three days in Apia and gathered scientists, policymakers, researchers, and indigenous academics from across the region.

Sir Collin Tukuitonga, the newly inducted fellow and chairman, emphasized that the Pacific Islands are at the forefront of climate change impacts despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions. He noted the distress experienced by communities needing to relocate, leaving behind their ancestors and cultural heritage. “It’s wonderful to be with people who think the same and share the mahi, the emotion, and the knowledge,” he expressed.

Among the attendees was Professor Jemaima Tiatia-Siau, pro vice-chancellor Pacific at the University of Auckland and a foundation fellow of the academy. She echoed the call for leadership from within the Pacific, stating that Pacific-centered science is essential in reflecting core values such as love, service, and the spiritual connections that bind communities together. Dr. Tiatia-Siau stressed that Indigenous knowledge must work alongside scientific methods to produce tangible, equitable outcomes for Pacific peoples.

Sir Collin reiterated that it is time for Pasifika experts to take charge, advocating for the theme of the Congress, “Harnessing Pacific knowledge.” He pointed out the need for the region to reclaim the narrative and control of research, stating, “we’ve relied too much on outside voices telling us the problems. It’s time… to amplify Pacific voices.”

The Pacific Academy of Sciences, established in 2024, aims to enhance the study and use of both natural and social sciences, technology, humanities, and Indigenous wisdom to benefit not only Pacific communities but also the global society. The involvement and initiative of local experts mark a hopeful and progressive step towards addressing the unique challenges faced by the region.
