Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has addressed concerns regarding alcohol consumption following a recent brawl outside a popular nightclub in Suva. He emphasized the importance of knowing one’s limits when it comes to liquor intake, particularly as people prepare to celebrate the New Year.

Mr. Fong Chew noted that incidents like the recent altercation often stem from excessive drinking, which impairs individuals’ judgment and awareness of their surroundings. He pointed out that engaging with someone who is over-intoxicated can be challenging, as they may believe their actions and words are justified, even when they are not.

Nightclub owners have the right to refuse service to overly intoxicated patrons; however, these situations can escalate and lead to conflict, particularly when friends of the intoxicated individual intervene. The Commissioner urged the public to celebrate responsibly, respect their surroundings, and be considerate of fellow revelers.

In his message, Mr. Fong Chew encouraged individuals to remain aware of their behavior, both verbal and physical, while under the influence of alcohol, as such actions could lead to unfortunate incidents. He stressed that personal responsibility is essential, as individuals have the capacity to make choices and to recognize situations that may lead to aggression.

Furthermore, he reminded the public that being mindful of their actions can significantly contribute to a safer environment for everyone. As the New Year approaches, the message is clear: enjoyment should go hand in hand with responsibility.

This emphasis on responsible drinking and personal accountability serves as an important reminder that collective enjoyment can be preserved when individuals make informed choices about their alcohol consumption.

As we enter a season of celebration, let us heed this advice and look forward to a joyful, safe, and harmonious New Year with friends and family.
