Parliament Suspended: Water Crisis Impacting Fiji’s Governance

The Parliamentary session scheduled for today has been canceled due to a three-day water disruption impacting the Nausori-Suva corridor. Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu announced the suspension of proceedings yesterday.

An advisory from the Parliament of Fiji indicated that safety concerns related to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) made it impossible to ensure adequate hygiene standards at the Parliamentary complex during the water cuts. The advisory confirmed that Parliament will remain closed tomorrow and is set to resume normal operations on Monday, October 7, 2024.

In contrast, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro has stated that schools will continue to operate today. He assured that the Ministry is coordinating with the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) to provide a reliable water supply for schools during this period.

Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau also reassured the public that WAF is prepared to manage the planned water disruptions effectively. He noted that water trucks will be on standby and encouraged residents in the Nausori-Suva corridor to contact WAF if they need assistance.

Fijians who require help can reach out to WAF using their toll-free number 334 6777, shortcode 5777 (available on all mobile networks), the WAF Mobile App, or via email at contact@waf.com.fj.
