Filimone Jitoko has officially been appointed as the chancellor of the University of Fiji during a graduation ceremony held this week at the Saweni campus. Jitoko, who also serves as the Speaker of Parliament, emphasized his commitment to fulfilling his responsibilities in line with the university’s Act.
In his inaugural address, Jitoko expressed his dedication to facilitating fairness, wisdom, and impartiality, aiming to foster academic excellence and bolster the institution’s research and community service initiatives. He pointed out the significance of the university, stating, “The University of Fiji is not just a place of learning; it is a vital hub of knowledge, generating future leaders who will navigate the great ocean we call Pasifika.” He further encouraged graduates, reminding them that their degrees symbolize the beginning of their service to their country and the broader Pacific region.
Vice-chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem extended a warm welcome to Jitoko, highlighting his extensive background in public service and judicial practice. She recognized the immense value Jitoko’s experience brings to the university community, describing him as a figure of great renown who will enhance the institution’s stature.
Professor Shameem also encouraged Jitoko to engage with the university and its activities, acknowledging the jovial competition among students during sports events. In a light-hearted manner, she thanked him in advance for taking on this role amidst the festivities, emphasizing the importance of maintaining human values alongside sportsmanship.
