Parliament in Fiji will be prorogued from Monday, December 16, 2024, until its next session begins on Monday, February 24, 2025. Prorogation marks the formal conclusion of a Parliamentary session, halting all parliamentary activities for the duration, with the exception of urgent matters that may arise, as determined by the Speaker of Parliament.
The Honourable Speaker has officially notified His Excellency the President about the prorogation and the scheduled State Opening. The upcoming State Opening will be presided over by His Excellency President Ratu Naiqama Tawakecolati Lalabalavu at 10:00 a.m., following a ceremonial military Guard-of-Honour by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.
The event is set to include attendance from distinguished members of the judiciary, including the Acting Honourable Chief Justice Salesi Temo, Justices of Appeal, and other Puisne Judges. Following the State Opening, Parliament is slated to reconvene for a two-week session beginning on March 3, 2025. Meanwhile, administrative operations of the Parliament secretariat will remain active throughout the prorogation unless stated otherwise.
This prorogation period allows Parliament members a chance to reflect on past legislative sessions and prepare for the new challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the upcoming session. It encourages a pause for organization, planning, and the reevaluation of key issues affecting Fiji’s governance.
In summary, this period marks a significant point in Fiji’s legislative process, setting the stage for renewed discussions and potential developments in February 2025.
