Parliament Erupts as Sugar Minister Calls Opponent a Kid in Fire Safety Row

A heated exchange occurred in Parliament on Friday as Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh labeled Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma a “kid” during discussions regarding fire prevention measures in the Fiji Sugar Corporation. Singh was addressing the corporation’s initiatives to strengthen fire safety protocols and disaster preparedness at mills when he made the comment directed at Sharma.

Sharma critically responded, asserting, “For the minister to respond to me and say that I’m a kid… we are not small kids. Kids can come to Parliament and ask serious questions.” He went on to question Singh’s accountability regarding the recent fire at the Rarawai Mill in Ba, emphasizing that video footage showed bagasse scattered around, which contributed to the fire’s spread. Sharma pressed Singh to acknowledge whether there was negligence from his ministry regarding this incident.

In defense of his actions, Singh stated his role as a minister does not involve closely monitoring the operations at the Fiji Sugar Corporation. However, Sharma’s challenges underscored ongoing concerns about negligence and accountability in the sugar industry, an issue that has gained traction amid criticisms of Singh’s previous conduct.

Similar controversies have plagued the Minister, including previous public rows with industry stakeholders. Singh has argued for greater transparency and communication within the sugar sector, reflecting broader issues that persist within the industry, such as declining production and management conflicts. These dynamics have fueled ongoing calls for better collaboration and responsiveness from government officials.

Despite the turbulent exchanges, there remains a glimmer of hope for the Fiji sugar industry. Engaging all parties in constructive dialogue could facilitate much-needed reforms, ultimately leading to enhanced support for farmers and improvements in the sector’s operational challenges. Positive changes could bolster community trust and effectiveness within the industry as stakeholders unite efforts to revitalize Fiji’s sugar production.
