Parliament Delays Presidential Nominations Amid Water Crisis

The Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, has announced that Parliament will postpone the nominations for the appointment of the President of Fiji and the acknowledgment of the President’s appointment. These items were scheduled for discussion today but will be addressed in a future session.

Ratu Naiqama explained that the decision follows a notification from the Office of the Speaker regarding planned maintenance work by the Water Authority of Fiji starting at midnight tonight.

He noted that the only urgent matter on tomorrow’s agenda is a Bill put forth by the Prime Minister, which they plan to discuss today. Additionally, Ratu Naiqama stated that tomorrow’s parliamentary session would be suspended due to anticipated water cuts affecting residents in the Suva – Nausori corridor.

Neither the Government nor the Opposition opposed the motion to suspend tomorrow’s sitting, and Ratu Naiqama mentioned that he would seek further advice on the situation.
