Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has urged parents and guardians to utilize the $200 government assistance exclusively for their children’s back-to-school preparations. At the launch of the new Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS) online application system in Suva, Radrodro emphasized that this financial aid is designed to help families as they get ready for the 2025 academic year.
“The $200 is to provide assistance for parents and guardians in terms of preparing their children to start with their 2025 academic journey,” Radrodro stated, highlighting the importance of using the funds for educational expenses. He pleaded with families to ensure that the assistance is allocated solely for school-related items.
Finance Minister Biman Prasad echoed Radrodro’s message, stressing the importance of prudent spending. “This assistance addresses rising costs and the economic challenges many families face in the post-COVID era,” he noted.
The initiative is particularly beneficial for families with an annual income below $50,000 and has historically supported around 200,000 students yearly, costing the government approximately $130 million. This ongoing financial support is expected to ease the economic burden as families prepare to purchase necessary school supplies, including uniforms, books, and stationery, often required after the holiday season.
The government’s commitment to education is further demonstrated through these initiatives, aiming to foster an environment where students enter school well-prepared and eager to learn. As we approach the new school year, this financial assistance not only alleviates immediate financial pressures for families but also underscores the government’s dedication to enhancing educational opportunities across the community, paving the way for a more hopeful future for students.
