The Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has issued a crucial reminder for parents to exercise greater responsibility and vigilance over their children during the current school break. This call to action follows the tragic incident in which a five-year-old girl from Naituvatuvatu Village in Wainibuka, Tailevu, was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross the Waisomi River. Despite the efforts of local authorities and a search team, the child’s body was recovered the following morning after the search was temporarily paused due to darkness and adverse weather conditions.

The young girl was with seven other children and her 32-year-old aunt, returning from collecting edible lady fern when the tragedy occurred. The village headman reported the incident to the police, who quickly dispatched officers to aid in locating the child.

ACPO Driu emphasized the importance of parents being present and attentive to their children, encouraging families to prioritize safety during the holidays and avoid large gatherings that could pose potential dangers.

This incident serves as a profound reminder of the necessity for constant vigilance, especially in natural environments where children may be vulnerable. While this incident is a somber one, it also highlights the community’s response and the ongoing concern for child safety, urging families to come together to ensure the well-being of their young ones.

In summary, while we mourn the loss of a young life, it is crucial that we take this opportunity to foster a culture of safety and attentiveness among families, preventing future tragedies through proactive engagement and care.
