The Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) is urging parents to evaluate their children’s past academic performance and establish realistic goals as they prepare for the upcoming school year. General Secretary Muniappa Goundar emphasized the crucial role that parental support plays in a child’s educational success. “Active encouragement from home is essential for students to thrive academically,” he stated.

As the new school year approaches, Mr. Goundar noted that preparations should not be left until the last minute. He advised parents to prioritize quality over quantity when purchasing school supplies such as uniforms, stationery, and textbooks. “Creating a supportive learning environment at home is just as important as ensuring children have the right materials,” he commented.

In conjunction with this, the Minister of Education, Aseri Radrodro, has announced the early distribution of the $200 Back-to-School support aimed at assisting families in preparing for the new academic year. This financial support is critical, especially for families with incomes below $50,000, and is intended to ease the burden of buying essential school items.

This year, the disbursement has been expedited, providing families with extra time to get ready for the school year, which begins on January 27, 2025. Parents can access this support through mobile platforms like MPAiSA or MyCASH, as well as at Post Fiji outlets, ensuring that the funds are easily obtainable for necessary purchases.

With a long-term commitment to education, the government’s initiatives reflect a proactive approach to educational readiness and assistance for families. This collaborative effort between the FTU and the government emphasizes the importance of community support in preparing students for success, fostering a hopeful outlook for the new academic year.

In summary, as Fiji gears up for the school year, both parental involvement and government support are vital for fostering an environment conducive to learning and growth, ensuring all students have the resources they need to succeed.
