Parents Urged: Keep Kids Safe This Holiday Season!

As the school holidays and festive season approach, parents are being encouraged to identify potential hazards within their communities to protect their children’s safety and well-being. Shairana Ali, the CEO of Save the Children Fiji, has emphasized the heightened vulnerability of children to abuse, particularly in light of increasing drug-related and criminal activities.

With the seven-week school break starting this weekend, the risk of children and teenagers being exposed to drugs, alcohol, and other dangers rises significantly. Ali stresses the importance of parental vigilance during this time. She states, “The onus is on the parents, guardians, and caregivers to work together to make their communities safe for their children. It is crucial that parents supervise their children and ensure that a responsible adult is looking after them when they are out.”

Deputy Director of Community Policing, Superintendent Rakesh Chand, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the essential role parents play in their children’s care. He noted that while schools provide supervision, the responsibility shifts to parents once children are home, stating, “It is vital that parents know where their children are and understand their duty of care towards them.”

In this context, Save the Children Fiji urges parents to engage in open conversations with their children regarding safety, keep track of their whereabouts, and foster awareness of harmful substances and activities. Ali added, “It’s the responsibility of parents to prioritize family time, educate their children, and spend quality time together.”
