Parents Left in the Lurch: Back-to-School Support Payment Delays Explained

The Ministry of Education has issued a statement addressing delays experienced by some parents in receiving the $200 Back-to-School Support payment. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro highlighted that these issues stem from incorrect information provided by applicants, which has hindered the payment process. This delay poses challenges for families as they prepare to purchase essential school items for their children.

Minister Radrodro explained that applications had to be completed at schools, requiring verification by school heads before the deadline of December 13, 2024. He noted that discrepancies in details such as FEMIS ID numbers, Birth Registration Numbers, mobile numbers, and payment methods (including TMO, MPaisa/MyCash) were common problems affecting distribution.

Concerns about breaches of confidentiality due to third-party inquiries and late submissions from some schools further complicate the situation. For parents with children enrolled in Year 12 for the upcoming 2025 school year, timely submission of applications is critical for processing to begin once enrollment is confirmed.

In light of frustrations expressed by some parents regarding delays, it’s worth noting past support initiatives have shown the government’s commitment to financial assistance. In previous years, the government processed over 208,000 applications for back-to-school payments, with many families relying on this aid for school essentials.

The Back-to-School Support program is a significant governmental effort, investing approximately $130 million annually to alleviate educational expenses for low-income families. This dedication reflects an ongoing commitment to enhancing educational accessibility and reducing financial burdens for families preparing for a new academic year.

As the Ministry addresses these challenges, it remains hopeful that solutions will ensure timely support for all families, allowing them to adequately prepare their children for school and fostering a positive learning environment moving forward. By resolving these issues, the Ministry and local schools can work collaboratively to strengthen the educational foundation for students across the community.
