Parents at a Crossroads: Are They Failing Fiji’s Children?

The free education initiative has been recognized as a significant policy aimed at ensuring that every child can complete their education without facing financial hurdles. However, recent figures show a troubling trend, with 5,726 secondary school dropouts and 4,589 unregistered primary school students between 2019 and 2023.

Despite the Ministry of Education’s efforts, which include transport support and vocational education pathways, these concerning numbers highlight a worrying reality—parents are not adequately fulfilling their responsibilities towards their children’s education.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro’s statements in Parliament should have resonated with families across Fiji, yet there seems to be a tendency to overlook personal accountability. With the government offering free schooling, free textbooks, and bus fare assistance, the question arises: why are so many students still not attending school?

The reasons put forth, including migration, family issues, and choosing work over education, only scratch the surface of a deeper problem. The fundamental issue stems from a lack of appreciation for education and a failure to prioritize the future of the country’s youth. Parents often point fingers at external factors instead of recognizing their own part in this ongoing crisis.

When families do not emphasize the importance of education, it leads to generations of children facing a future filled with missed opportunities. Reverend Simione Tugi’s thought-provoking questions underscore the serious implications: “If this is what we are noticing, then what can we expect? Will we see an increase in youths on the streets committing crimes?” These inquiries are turning from theoretical concerns into real challenges for Fiji. If families do not take action, the nation will continue to struggle with increasing dropout rates, disillusioned youth, and a grim outlook.

It is crucial for parents to take responsibility, dedicate time, and prioritize their children’s education. The government has upheld its commitments; now it is time for parents to fulfill theirs.
