Combatting corruption remains a high priority for Papua New Guinea (PNG), prompting the government to implement more stringent laws aimed at eradicating corrupt practices that have become entrenched in society. Richard Masere, Minister of State in the Ministry of Administrative Services, emphasized the importance of addressing corruption to ensure the country’s security, stability, and sustainable development.

Leading a delegation of 21 members to the UN Conference of States Parties (COSP11) against Corruption in Doha, Qatar, Masere highlighted the current government’s dedication to fostering partnerships with non-state actors, including civil society organizations, donors, and international partners.

Key legislative measures, such as the Whistle-blower Protection Act passed in 2020, are being reviewed to enhance protective mechanisms for individuals reporting corruption. The government is also reassessing the Anti-money Laundering and Counter Terrorist Financing framework to align with recommendations from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

Corruption permeates various sectors in PNG, impacting politics, business, and law enforcement. Efforts are underway to build the capacity of integrity institutions and the judiciary, with a focus on conducting corruption risk assessments across national and provincial governments. The collected data will be instrumental in shaping PNG’s future anti-corruption strategy.

Additionally, the establishment of a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in PNG has been welcomed, as it promises to enhance support and collaboration in addressing corruption challenges. Marie Jane Fatiaki, the Officer in Charge of UNODC’s Programme Office for Papua New Guinea, underscored the vital role of societal involvement in tackling corruption and acknowledged the government’s commitment to including civil society in these efforts.

As PNG navigates the complexities of corruption, these initiatives signal a positive step towards a more transparent and accountable governance framework, uplifting the nation’s prospects for a stable and sustainable future.
