Papua New Guinea Charts a Climate Investment Path at Sydney Summit

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is set to elevate its role in climate leadership with a significant climate investment summit scheduled for December 8, during the PNG Investment Week (PNGIW25) at Sydney’s International Convention Centre.

The summit will feature a keynote address by renowned climate scientist Professor Tim Flannery, who has dedicated over 45 years to working in PNG. He expressed his honor in delivering the keynote, emphasizing the unique significance this opportunity holds for him. Professor Flannery highlighted PNG’s natural resources, biodiversity, and resilient communities, asserting that they pave the way for a sustainable future. He believes that the summit represents a pivotal moment, illustrating how international investment, supported by the innovations of PNG’s communities, can lead to climate solutions not only for PNG but for the entire region and beyond.

The event will also include insights from a diverse group of speakers, including representatives from Australia, the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation, Bank of PNG, and KPMG, alongside PNG regulators and experts. Discussions will focus on financial innovation, regulatory trends, and the potential for sustainable growth, showcasing active investment case studies across various themes like mangrove conservation, circular waste management, and resilient infrastructure.

Emphasizing the critical nature of climate investment, PNG Chamber of Resources and Energy President Anthony Smaré remarked that it is a cornerstone of PNG’s development priorities. By hosting the Climate Investment Summit during PNGIW25, Smaré noted that PNG is positioning climate investment as a key focus alongside traditional economic sectors. He also urged stakeholders from government, business, and community sectors in PNG, Australia, and the Pacific to engage in the summit to advance the climate agenda collaboratively.

This summit represents not just an opportunity for financial dialogue but a chance for PNG to demonstrate its commitment to climate action and sustainable development, positioning itself as a regional hub for innovation and collaboration in addressing climate challenges.
