The General Secretary of the People’s Alliance Party (PAP), Sila Balawa, recently stated that the party’s members largely support the organization due to their confidence in Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s leadership. In an interview, Balawa addressed Rabuka’s suggestion to include leadership succession on the party agenda, indicating a collective desire among members for Rabuka to continue leading as they prepare for the upcoming elections.

Balawa noted that the Prime Minister may be considering grooming potential successors among senior party members, which has sparked discussions about future leadership dynamics within the PAP. He emphasized that many members view Rabuka as the primary reason for their loyalty to the party.

Rabuka, acknowledging public concerns regarding his administration’s size and effectiveness, has indicated that internal coalition dynamics have occasionally hindered governance. He revealed that only three cabinet members from the G9 coalition currently hold full ministerial portfolios, while the remainder serve as assistant ministers. Rabuka stressed the need for stronger leadership and better decision-making powers centralized in his office to address public criticism and improve government functionality.

To enhance accountability and ensure a focused governance approach, Rabuka signaled a willingness to reassess executive roles within the administration, suggesting that underperforming officials may need to be moved or replaced to create a more effective team. His commitment focuses on building a better, more accountable Fiji as the nation gears up for critical elections.

This phase of leadership evaluation within the PAP presents an essential opportunity for renewal and engagement with the electorate, which may play a significant role in shaping their strategy for the future – hopefully fostering unity and resilience as they move forward. The proactive steps taken by both Rabuka and Balawa could encourage a more responsive and involved political climate in Fiji, resonating well with the aspirations of the Fijian people.
