People’s Alliance party co-deputy leader Ro Filipe Tuisawau has reaffirmed the party’s unwavering support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Tuisawau’s comments come amid calls for Rabuka to relinquish his constitutional immunity and testify before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, particularly in light of historical events such as the 1987 coup, marking its 38th anniversary.
Tuisawau stated, “The Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has already stated that he is ready to lead PAP into the next election and we in PAP are in full support and ready.” He emphasized the party’s unity and determination to remain focused on their objectives, insisting that progress must continue despite external pressures. “We are firm and united in the leadership of Mr. Rabuka,” he declared.
Former PAP vice-president Ro Naulu Mataitini publicly challenged Rabuka, arguing that true leadership requires fully addressing past actions and that Raubka’s reconciliation efforts may lack sincerity. He urged the Prime Minister to testify before the commission and to consider stepping aside once a successor is endorsed, stating, “This would dismantle the legal loopholes that incentivize future power grabs.”
These sentiments echo the ongoing conversations within the PAP regarding leadership and accountability. Rabuka himself previously expressed willingness to continue leading if backed by the party, but is prepared to step aside if they believe a different direction is necessary. Despite challenges, he has maintained that the party’s voter base is strong, emphasizing, “I will not desert the party,” showcasing his deep commitment.
The political landscape ahead of the 2026 General Election presents crucial opportunities for dialogue and renewal within the party. As they navigate these complex dynamics, there remains hope that the PAP’s unity will not only stabilize the party but also foster greater public trust as they work towards meaningful reforms.
In light of the commitment shown by the leadership, there is reason to be optimistic that the People’s Alliance Party can regain public confidence and position itself effectively in the upcoming elections.
